چکیده

High strength aluminum alloys, especially those containing zirconium, are historically difficult to grain refine. Early efforts by Alcoa indicated that the addition of lithium to these alloys increases difficulty with grain refinement. Although grain refining of alloys 2090 and 2091 was possible, consistent results were not obtained. Statistically-designed experiments were used to quickly identify critical parameters in both the casting and grain refining operations. Responses from variables including alloy composition, amount and type of grain refining addition, melt temperature and cooling rate were quantified prior to establishing control limits. Production ingot cast by Alcoa are now consistently grain refined. Future work will simultaneously investigate the impact of important process variables on the fundamental mechanisms of grain refining and establish appropriate targets and ranges for these variables.

Microstructure and Grain Refining Performance of a New Al-Ti-C Master Alloy (RESEARCH NOTE)

Control of microstructure parameters that affecting the Al-Ti-C master alloys grain refining efficiency is leading to improve the aluminum grain refinement. This study was an attempt to produce Al-Ti-C master alloys that provide these controlling factors with relying on the solute effect theory. The produced master alloys were examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispers...

Performance Comparison of Al–Ti Master Alloys with Different Microstructures in Grain Refinement of Commercial Purity Aluminum

Three types of Al-5Ti master alloys were synthesized by a method of thermal explosion reaction in pure molten aluminum. Performance comparison of Al-5Ti master alloy in grain refinement of commercial purity Al with different additions (0.6%, 1.0%, 1.6%, 2.0%, and 3.0%) and holding time (10, 30, 60 and 120 min) were investigated. The results show that Al-5Ti master alloy with blocky TiAl₃ partic...

Effect of Material and Process Atmosphere in the Preparation of Al-Ti-B Grain Refiner by SHS

Al-Ti-B master alloys are widely used in the aluminum industry as grain refiners for the control of the microstructure of the aluminum alloys. The SHS (self-propagating high-temperature synthesis) is an ex situ method that uses exothermic reactions to sustain the chemical reaction in a combustion wave. The advantages of SHS are the low energy requirement, simplicity and product purity. However,...

Synthesis of Fe-Al-Ti Based Intermetallics with the Use of Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS)

The Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) technique was combined with direct synthesis to fabricate L21-ordered Fe-Al-Ti based intermetallic alloys. It was found that ternary Fe-Al-Ti alloys can be synthesized using the LENS technique from a feedstock composed of a pre-alloyed Fe-Al powder and elemental Ti powder. The obtained average compositions of the ternary alloys after the laser deposition ...

Grain Refinement Efficiency in Commercial-Purity Aluminum Influenced by the Addition of Al-4Ti Master Alloys with Varying TiAl3 Particles

A series of Al-4Ti master alloys with various TiAl₃ particles were prepared via pouring the pure aluminum added with K₂TiF₆ or sponge titanium into three different molds made of graphite, copper, and sand. The microstructure and morphology of TiAl₃ particles were characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The microstructure of TiA...
